I would like to build a 70's style music lightbox. I would like mine to be a more modern design with individual frequency band adjustments. 4 band. I haven't seen one of these in decades.

Perhaps look for back issues of, for example, siliconchip magazine.
The units then were known omongst other things as " musicolour".

"Color Organ" was another name for them.

Trouble with doing a search for such things can take one to surprising places.
Bit like "midnight special" for my Yamaha motorcycle.
