Hi,

With a 4 layer PCB, what is the standard max allowable voltages between
stacked layers on one side of the FR-4? Is 600Volts pushing the
dielectric breakdown of the insulation? Does this get checked during
UL certification?

cheers,
Jamie

"FR-4" is pretty generic. Check with your particular board vendor. I
just checked Isola 370HR, which is one FR-4 type material that I used
on a recent project; it's rated over 700 volts per mil. There are
things you can do to screw that up in processing: if the applied
voltage is AC and there are any voids, you can get corona that will
deteriorate organic dielectrics... so I'd ask the board house what
they guarantee.

As for UL--seems like a good question for UL...likely not the last one
before you're done!

Cheers,
Tom
