Ever hear of Google? A search reveals that the following info was supplied
on this group by Wile E Coyote, er, Glen Goodwin at ACME in Orlando:

(Sorry Glen, it was just too tempting...)

The suffix M or P is HFE rank of 2SC4834.
The following list shows you HFE range:
M => 10 - 15
N => 12 - 18
P => 16 - 22
R => 20 - 27
Presumably you are repairing a Sony PS. The bottom line is that in the Sony
power supplies that use these, the P rank version is the best choice. Sony
used M, N and P rand versions. You can use the higher gain (HFE) but not
lower than what is in the set. R rank transistors are rare and unnecessary.
It is important to match the pair and to check all of the components in the
supply and repair the cause of the problem, often in the output stage. If
you do not have the Sony training info for the chassis you are working on
you should try to get it. More Googling with result in lots of info on the
matter. Posting the model unit and the problem you are working on would
likely yeild some specific help.

NTE will not give you this info. It will give you a cross for the basic
2sc4834 only, which I would not use.

The difference is the gain. Higher letters have higher gain ranges. Do a
google search for previous posts here. These parts and the Sony circuits
they are found in are discussed ad nauseum.
