Can I asked you what good is an external EPROM if it can't be read by the host?

You can kinda lock integrated EPROM chips as the host will have a backdoor to get in, or you can use keyed encryption if you can access the host firmware...

You could get sorta fancy and encode the data on the EPROM and key pair it with a small micro (one that has some locking ability) and use the micro as a translator between the real host and the EPROM... A sloppy hack overall but it can be done... But that isn't to say someone couldn't spoof the host and monitor the unencoded outputs sent back...

But, don't for one second think it's secure since there are companies in Asia that are built upon dumping secure chips and do most of the dumps quite reasonable...

My advice, just deter the easy to deter opportunist, grind off the chips identifying markings and pot the chip in black epoxy to cover access to the pins... And don't waste time worrying about it...
