230 Volt Inverter Earthing

Can anyone out there advise me as to why a 300 watt, 230 volt inverter run
from a car battery has to have the neutral earthed?

It says this in the manual that came with the thing but doesn't explain why.

probally cause code calls for it

There's a good chunk in the Wiring Regs on generating sets
(includes UPS's and any other source of electrical power).
Earthing them correctly is a non-trivial issue.
