My smoke detectors have 3 wires coming out of them.

Black, white, and yellow.

Black and white fr 110VAC and the yellow for interconnectivity.

All I see discussed is 2 and 4 wire.

Would someone please unconfuse me?

2 and 4 wire detectors refer to smoke detectors used on alarm systems, a 4
wire smoke has two power wires usually 12 or 24 volts DC and 2 circuit wires
to trigger the alarm panel. A 2 wire smoke requires only two wires for power
and the alarm circuit.
The 2 wire smoke must be listed as compatible with the alarm panel.

What you probably have are 110 volt AC smoke alarms with an interconnect
wire. The interconnect wire is used to activate the sounder on all the smoke
alarms in the event one detects smoke

2 and 4 wire smoke detectors as referred to in this group, are low
voltage devices used in alarm installations. The one's you are talking
about are 110vac units.

Thanks,

Do low voltage 2 and 4 wire smoke detectors also have battery backup?

Do any 2 or 4 wire units have battery backup?

They are powered by the alarm control, which has a battery backup. There are
no batteries in the detectors themselves.

Not that I'm aware of, they draw their power from the control panel, which
does have, or should have a battery back up.

Technically, they all do. The battery is in the alarm control panel.
