120V AC connector for light

Hi,

I am looking for a connector that is as small as possible for power entry.

I have a Neutrik powercon M/F set but, the female panel mount requires more
than an inch depth!

The device I am working with has 1 inch depth, so the panel mount connector
can only be half that

to allow for wire connection clearance.

I have an IEC panel mount but, it doesn't lock.

Any suggestions ?

How much current do you need? Do you need a ground wire? If less than
2.5 A and no ground needed, you might use one of the two-pin connectors
that are commonly found on portable stereos, laptop power supplies, etc.
A Schurter 4300.0096 or 4300.0097 is only about half an inch behind the
panel and costs less than a dollar at Mouser. The matching cord is
about $4.

If your enclosure looks like this (use a fixed width font)
_________
/ /|
/________/ |
| | |
| | |
| |B| _
| A | / / 1"
|________|/ _/

it sounds like you want to put the connector at A. Can you put it at
B instead to get more depth?

If the 120 V AC is going to turn into something else inside the
enclosure, the classic solution is to move the power supply outside. In
a desperate case, you might use a wall-wart outside to get, say, 24 VAC,
a small coaxial power plug and jack, and then a transformer inside the
enclosure to get back to 120 V. This is probably only workable if you
need less than about 30 watts.

The above connectors don't lock either. If you want locking you may
have to use a standard connector and provide your own clip or whatever
to hold the plug in.

You might also ask over in sci.electronics.components .
