    Transistor alternative

I am working on a project (http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/2126272 Schematic.pdf) that uses Transistor General Purpose BJT NPN 40 Volt 0.2 Amp 3-Pin TO-92 transistors and I think I might have blown them with my 40w soldering iron, so I am going to stop at Fry's Electronics today to...

    Circuit help - Bluelight

Ah, ok, my math was off. There is no data sheet for the new LEDs, so I don't know what the max mA is, but I think it would better to keep them around 20mA. Therefore, I will get resistors around 280Ω.

    Circuit help - Bluelight

I think what I will do, since the blue LEDs have a typical Vf of 3.5 and these new LEDs have a typical Vf of 3.4, I will just use the 160Ω resistors since I have a bunch of them.

    Circuit help - Bluelight

Thanks, I read through the page, and if I understand correctly, I would want a pair of resistors around 220Ω. Am I on track?

    Circuit help - Bluelight

Hey guys, I am working on the following project using the schematic in this link: http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/2126272%20Schematic.pdf The LEDs that come with this kit are shown on the right side of the schematic. The Blue LEDs have a max Vf of 4.0, the Red LEDs have a max Vf...

    Power source help

No, I'm sure it was a mechanical issue in the barrel itself because I got the exact same one and wired it the exact same way and had no problems. Plus, the two non-positive pins both had continuity within the barrel itself and I did not put them on the same buses. It was an 89 cent DC power...

    Power source help

Well, I did get it to work! I used my friend's DMM and tested every single component on the board and found that every single one was wired correctly. I tested the the power source again and determined that it was working correctly, and yet, the car fuse was shorting every time. It turned out...

    Power source help

Thanks for the analogies. Haha. My friend's dad is an electronics engineer and told me to not even try to wrap my head around potential difference. At least, not until after I understood everything else. I think my multimeter is a piece of crap. It measures continuity fine, but it does not...

    Power source help

How do I know what the resistance measurement (in ohms) should be? Or am I just looking for any output?

    Power source help

Can I plug the circuit in and test the voltage without damaging anything? Would that be the best way to figure out where the short is or where it is messing up?

Oops. Forgot to attach. I'll also take a back photo real quick.

The IC2 opamp is the MC34072P, so I used the upper diagram. Here is a better photo. I used my 5500 lumens light. Haha.

Also, all white wires are wired to IC1 pins, all green wires go to the main ground bus, and all red wires are go to the power bus.

    Power source help

Here are the photos of the front and back. The virtual ground does not connect to the main ground. The virtual ground line goes directly from the VG pins on the IC1 to the 1 and 2 pins on IC2 and does not touch the ground. IC2 does go to ground, though. IC1 is the 14 pin, which I know is in...

    Power source help

Just put the red lead into the center and the black touching the outside and got a reading of 12.34V positive, so the adaptor is fine. This is the schematic of the project I am working on (http://www.jameco.com/Jameco/Products/ProdDS/2126272%20Schematic.pdf), so it is definitely a pain to...

    Power source help

Ok, I will go test the adaptor. My board must not be wired right, then, because I found the 15A fuse in my car's fusebox blown last night, and the only thing I can attribute it to is the color organ. Haha.

    Power source help

Adam, thank you for your answer. I am positive that the polarity is correct. The adaptor and the 2.1mm plug for the adaptor came separately, so I wired the positive wire to the center and the negative to the outside. The 2.1mm female jack has a center-pin that outputs to the positive bus (it's...

    Power source help

Hello all, I am very new to electronics, but I am very keen to learn all that I can. Of course, there is so much to learn and it can be a bit overwhelming. I am currently working on an LED color organ project that I got from Jameco. I built the board per the schematic and as far as I can...
