I'm having a problem with my Sears Craftsman garage door opener.
Yesterday, when I came home from work, I opened the garage door using
the remote. After driving in, I tried to close the door, but it only
clicked and would not close. I get the same response from either the
remote or the switch in the garage. There is an indicator light on
the back of the opener that is normally associated with reprogramming
remotes. This light blinks 5 times, pauses, then blinks 5 times
again, repeatedly. I assume this is some sort of code, but I have not
been able to determine the meaning of the code.

The opener is a model 139.53674SRT1. It is a 1/2 hp Craftsman opener
on a wooden one-car garage door.

I would appreciate any advice anyone can give me on this problem.

I do not have a Craftsman opener, but I would assume it might be made
by someone like Genie. Have you taken the cover off the unit? My unit
has a reset button inside and that might be all that you need to do
since the flashing might be an error code of sorts. Also, there is a
switch with several spring contacts on my unit, and that might need
    cleaning with fine emery cloth.

The blinking light usually indicates either the door hit something on the way
down, or the LED beam sensors at the door near the floor are inop. If the unit
closes when you hold the manual push button down, but stops when you release
it, it is more than likely the LED beam is inop. or out of adjustment.

I agree with the possible causes below, but will also add that the problem
could be with the door or track itself. For instance, if one of the torsion
springs broke the weight of the door would not be properly balanced and
could cause the door to jam on the track. Check the tracks, door, springs,
pulley/wheels and wires on either side to make sure they are OK.

Then check the opener itself to make sure it is still mounted soundly and
has not moved and that the drive mechanism is OK.

If everything looks good, then there is usually a sensitivity adjustment
that can be tweaked to a lower sensitivity. My unit has adjustments for
    both up and down directions.
