serial port analyzer

Hi,

I need to get some form of a serial port analyzer. Its not for use
forever, just need to fix a problem with an app that uses the serial
port.

Somehow, I would like to capture data and, if possible, view it in
ascii.

A quick search reveals lots of software applications which appear to be
the type one would load onto the PC with the questionable port, it runs
in the background, captures data in and out of that port for, I assume,
a preset amount of time or data.

These apps monitor the port on the PC they run on, no other hardware
required?

I have never used one like this before.

It would be ideal if I could just load this app and monitor that PC's
serial port, and even better if it could give me a dump of the traffic
in ascii text.

There are so many of these little apps, I also would like to know if
anyone has used one of the freebie, or fairly cheap ones ($50) as it
would be nice to know that what I am trying is something known to
actually work.

HHD Software has some very nice serial monitoring and analysis
applications. Serial Monitor Lite is right in your specified price range
at about USD $45.

I've used Serial Monitor with excellent results. Darn good UI,
clean monitoring, good stuff.

If you have two serial ports on your PC try TAL's serial breakout, its free.

There is a free application on the internet called portmon. It
might give you the data you want.

Thanks a lot. I found it, and it seems to be what I need. I am now able
to progress through this problem, and its so much nicer than guessing
:-)

I appreciate everyone's input on this. I actually found several pretty
nice apps, but forgot to mention that the machine is running NT 4.0,
which left out a number of programs that I think looked pretty slick
when I tried them on my Win2K machine first. <shrug>
