Dear Friends,
I'm a student, and I have to write a SW to connect an ATMEL CPU + CAN
INTERFACE to a CATERPILLAR CPU via CAN-BUS.
The protocol is SAE J1939.
My problem is I don't find anything on the WEB about the specifications.
Can anybody help me?
Thank you in advance.

* Find the SAE web site and see what it'll take to get the
specification. You may be able to chisel it out of SAE for free because
you're a student, or get your school library (if its a University) to
buy it for you.

* Get a copy of "Controller Area Network, Basics, Protocols, Chips and
Applications" by Konrad Etschberger", IXXAT Press, 2001. The ISBN is
3-00-007376-0. This is an excellent book, and I'd recommend it to
anyone who's contemplating a CAN project.

After you do that, you'll still need to know the messages that CAT uses
-- that's up to you.

Specifications of this sort usually have to be *purchased* directly
from SAE, and they're *not* cheap :-(

I love to cook with wine. Sometimes I even put it in the food.

Try http://www.kvaser.com/ and follow the education link to white papers
for this paper.

Diesel Engine Control, CAN Kingdom and J1939

That should give you a starting point.
