I'm baffled.........more than usual......

S/V "Crazy Jake" has a ship license with MMSI suitable for offshore.
Jake is a Amel Super Maramu 54 (dream big they told me). So, we buy
this HX850S and program it with the Amel 54's MMSI off its ship license.

While riding across the harbor in the Avon Jake uses for a dingy, one of
the tubes rips and the Avon is gonna go down, fast under the weight of
its outboard and all that gas. So, we pick up the HX850S and press the
DSC Emergency Button to call for help.

What's wrong with this picture?

CG's database finds this walkie's MMSI is a nice Amel 54 and the helos
go off looking for a white ketch with two masts loaded with stuff. Oh,
oh, I see a problem! Coast Guard and Sea Tow are looking for the WRONG
SHIP!

I bet they're gonna be ****ED when they find out you're using DSC on
that dink sending them looking for the big Amel for hours...eh?

Do we get a separate MMSI for each boat this handheld wonder is gonna be
used on? What if I carry it aboard my buddy's fishing boat? We'll need
a database of MMSIs if we carry it around from boat to boat!

....and I don't see any way of switching MMSIs to make it
valid....interesting, indeed.

If a man goes way out into the woods all alone and says something,
is it still wrong, even though no woman hears him?

WRONG! Your MMSI identifies the YACHT the license or pseudo license
registration with Boat/US is for.....NOT YOU.

This sends a false message to the rescue services looking for the YACHT,
not a dink.

Ok, the definitive answer is, that the Handheld IS licensed to the
vessel, as a "Portable Transmitter" and if you have more than one
aboard they are numbered, as "Vessel Name", "Vessel Callsign", Portable
1, 2, ect.... and IF they have DSC Capability they do get the vessel
MMSI programmed into them, and they then Ident via voice if the
Emergency Button is activated....
