DMX is an addressable control system used largely for theatrical lighting
control. It's a RS-422 differential unidirectional stream between the
controller (control board) and slave. Vey nice since everything is bussed
with a 5 pin XLR type connector - be it dimmer packs, smoke machines,
strobes or anything you can think of -except hoists. Since there is no
feedback for safety and confirmation that target position has been reached,
those applications are a no-no.
