A triac light dimmer, an old heating blanket regulator, or simply a diode in series to cut power in half?

Thanks for that, Resqueline. Light dimmer around $80 - I'd explored that but I'm on a lean pension. Daren't steal my wife's electric blanket. May come down to a diode but I'd prefer something variable ......

Ok, I see dimmers are as overpriced in your place as they are at mine. They really shouldn't be that costly as they are very simple devices. Lacking a well-stocked scrap-parts-bin you could still build a dimmer yourself for around a tenth of that price, or you might find one cheap on ebay. If those are not viable options you could put some bulb(s) in series with the iron to get more power steps.
